A ceremony took place earlier today to dedicate a National Guard warehouse in honor of Sgt. First Class Floyd E. Lake Sr. Sgt. Lake The officer passed away on January 20th when his UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was struck down by enemy fire in Iraq.

On board were 13 other members of his personnel along with fellow VI native Lt. Col. David Cagenata III. There were no survivors from this unfortunate event.

Kristine M. Munn, a spokesperson for the National Guard Bureau, described Sgt. Lake as “a soldier of the utmost professionalism and dedication.” Family members, friends, soldiers and number of government officials were on hand for today’s dedication ceremony. Brigadier General Renaldo Rivera presided over the event.

Another facility will be renamed in honor of the late Lt. Col. Canegata later this year. Sgt. Lake is survived by his wife and five children.

I salute Sgt. Lake and the other fine young men and women who gave their all in the fight against tyranny and persecution in Iraq.
However, the article posted here, which is a glowing tribute to that heroic man, mistakenly calls Sgt. Lake an officer. As a former enlisted man myself, I would like to point out that small inaccuracy since we of the enlisted ranks were quite proud of our designation. The sergeant rank is what is called a non-commissioned officer, it is true, but to military people there is a clear distinction and both sides of that equation are justifiably proud of their own, whether officer or enlisted.

This is by no means a criticism of the thoughtful and beautiful article, but just a small fact. Those enlisted men and women of our brave military cannot be praised enough for their personal sacrifices, their honor and the fact that there are none to match those like Sgt. Lake who indeed are evidence of the time-honored observation that there is no greater love shown that that shown by those who lay down their lives for others.

Mick - Thank you for your kind email about our remarks regarding Sgt. Lake. We stand corrected. The vast majority of the men and women serving in our Armed Forces are enlisted soldiers who are laying their lives on the line each day for those who are seeking freedom. We appreciate your thoughtful comments and for visiting our website. Enjoy your day!

Jim,

Thanks so much for your kind reply. I want absolutely nothing to detract from the beautiful appreciation article on Sgt. Lake, so perhaps, since the correction has been made, you could delete my comments. Or, if you like, just edit it to your satisfaction to take out the part dealing with the error.

By the way, I am a free-lance writer with services available if you could find a niche for me on your site. Here is a link to my old writing site: Mick’s Writings. If you think you could use my services in any way, I will also send you a resume.

I was first attracted to your site by reading an article in Inman’s News which talked about the teen blogger Joseph Natividad. My admiration for him is boundless.

Cheers,

Mick
